Planning Things to Do in Millerton NY for a Day Trip
Where Is Millerton, New York?
Located in northeastern Dutchess County, Millerton sits just over the Connecticut border, making it an easy day trip from the Litchfield Hills. It is approximately 45 minutes from Litchfield CT, and around two hours from New York City, depending on traffic.
Best Time to Visit Millerton
Weekends are the most popular, but they are also when everything is actually open. Like many small Hudson Valley towns, a lot of businesses shut down early in the week. For example, Harney & Sons is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Willa is closed on Sundays and Mondays. If you want the full experience, plan your trip for a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.
Where to Park in Downtown Millerton
Main Street in Millerton is concentrated and gets incredibly busy on the weekends. Because it is a popular border town destination, street parking along Main Street can fill up by mid morning. Instead of circling the block and fighting for a spot on Main Street, head straight to the public visitor parking on Century Blvd or Dutchess Ave. It is a perfectly centralized spot, and from there you can easily walk to everything in the center of town without the stress.
A Perfect Millerton NY Day Trip Itinerary
If you are planning to spend a Saturday here, you need to know how to pace your day. Because browsing shops, walking the rail trail, and stopping for tea all take up a good chunk of time, use this suggested schedule:
9:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Morning Coffee at Irving Farm (Grab a coffee and a bakery treat to kick off your morning.)
9:30 AM – 11:00 AM: Main Street Shopping (Allow about 1.5 hours to leisurely browse spots like Westerlind and Oblong Books without rushing.)
11:00 AM – 12:15 PM: Harlem Valley Rail Trail (Spend an hour or so walking or renting bikes for a scenic stretch of the path.)
12:15 PM – 2:00 PM: Lunch and Tea Tasting at Harney & Sons (Take your time exploring the flagship shop, tasting teas, and enjoying a relaxing sit down or private lunch.)
2:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Afternoon Browse & Antiques (Dedicate a couple of hours to checking out The Elephants Tusk, local art spaces, and secondary boutiques or catch a movie at The Moviehouse.)
4:00 PM – 4:45 PM: Afternoon Matcha at Muanjai Tea Bar (Stop in for a refreshing beverage to recharge before dinner.)
5:30 PM: Dinner at Willa (Wrap up your day with a relaxed, elevated meal. Note: Give yourself a break between afternoon shopping and dinner to freshen up.)
(Note: This itinerary focuses on exploring downtown Millerton and taking a short walk or bike ride along the rail trail. If you are planning to hike Brace Mountain it requires a significant time commitment.)
Best Coffee Shops and Tea Houses in Millerton NY
Millerton has an incredible beverage scene. I usually choose my morning stop based on exactly what I am in the mood for that day.
Irving Farm Coffee House
44 Main Street
If I want solid coffee, Irving Farm Coffee House is my default. Their roasts are fantastic but you also need to check their bakery case. If they have their Rice Krispies treats in stock, you absolutely have to grab one.
Muanjai Tea Bar
28 Main Street
Muanjai Tea Bar spot recently opened in town and brings a great new stop to the street. I highly recommend their seasonal matcha specials. They are unique and perfectly delicious. They are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.
Best Shopping in Millerton NY
The retail scene here is practical, eclectic, and unique. You can easily spend a few hours just browsing this stretch of road.
Westerlind
41 Main Street
Westerlind is one of my favorite stops in Millerton if you are interested in outdoor apparel. They stock functional gear like North Face and other brands that help you handle New England and New York weather. Walking through here feels more like exploring a curated outdoor department store rather than a generic retailer.
Oblong Books
26 Main Street
Oblong Books staple independent bookstore in the area. I love browsing their shelves and honestly never leave empty handed.
Harney & Sons Tea Shop
13 Main Street
Millerton is a massive destination for tea drinkers because Harney & Sons operates their flagship store and tasting bar right on Main Street. I like to shop their retail section for tea and accessories, and I usually grab a variety box to bring home. You can also reserve their back tea room for a private lunch. I did this and had great soup, sandwiches, and a few different tea drinks.
Antique Shops and Vintage Finds
I always walk through The Elephants Tusk for secondhand goods because you will find completely new inventory every time you visit. Dutchess Trading Co offers a very vintage and French inspired aesthetic for your home and closet. Rosemary Rose Finery carries beautiful jewelry and even hosts local art classes.
Shopping in Millerton
Stop into T Shirt Farm. The store is packed with band shirts and features a massive candy selection inside. Country Gardeners Florist is another great stop for picking up flowers and fun garden accessories.
Best Hiking Trails Near Millerton NY
You cannot visit this area of New York without spending time outside. You have two very different options depending on what kind of outdoor experience you want in Millerton.
This paved path cuts right through the center of town. You can head left or right directly from Main Street. It stretches over 26 paved miles and offers highly scenic views of the surrounding area without any elevation gain. There are a lot of bikers on this path, so if you do not want to haul your own gear, Trek Bicycle Millerton is located right in town for easy rentals. You can walk dogs on a leash here, but because of the heavy bike traffic, I usually opt for other trails when I have my pets with me.
Brace Mountain via the South Taconic Trail
For a serious, full day hike, Taconic State Park offers incredible access just minutes outside of the center of town. While many visitors stick to Rudd Pond in the summer for swimming or boat rentals, you can use this park area as a gateway to the upper ridgelines. Picking up the South Taconic Trail to Brace Mountain is not for the faint of heart, but it is one of the most rewarding hikes in the region.
Distance: 13 miles out and back
Elevation Gain: 2,900 feet
Difficulty: Difficult
Trailhead & Parking: Rudd Drive access area within Taconic State Park
Estimated Time: 7.5 hours
Route & Connection: You will park near Rudd Drive, access the trail network, and transition directly onto the South Taconic Trail. This route follows multiple ridges over a long distance.
Terrain & Steep Sections: Expect a mix of packed dirt paths, uphill climbs, and rocky scrambles. You may encounter sections where you must use your hands to navigate.
Navigation Considerations: Because this is an extended, lesser-traveled hike, pay close attention to trail markers and blazes. Download your offline map before arriving, as cellular service can drop out once you get deep into the park.
Seasonal Conditions: This trail is affected by weather. Spring brings heavy mud, while winter introduces ice and freezing wind chills. I always keep microspikes in my car during the colder months for safety.
Dog Considerations: Due to the 13 mile distance, rocks, steep vertical scrambles, and exposed ridge walking, this route is generally not suitable for most dogs unless they are highly conditioned.
Official Information: Always check current park alerts, hunting seasons, and trail advisories through the official Taconic State Park visitor resources before heading out.
The Ascent: The journey requires major physical effort right from the start, pushing you through forested inclines and rocky steps.
The Summit: Once you finally break the tree line, the peak of Brace Mountain opens up into a massive, expansive grassy ridge. You are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the Catskills to the west. It is so wide open and windy at the top that you will frequently see paragliders launching directly off the edge. Always respect the elements here, as the summit is entirely exposed to fast moving weather fronts.
Where to Eat in Millerton NY
Oakhurst Diner
19 Main Street
If I am coming straight off a hike, Oakhurst Diner is my favorite stop. It is a classic diner with great food. I like to grab a seat at the bar and order their daily specials.
Millerton Farmers Market
If you are visiting on a Saturday, do not miss the Millerton Farmers Market at 6 Dutchess Avenue. Running from 10 AM to 2 PM during its main season from May through November, it is a great place to pick up local produce, fresh baked goods, cheeses, and snacks from regional vendors. The market also operates on select dates during the winter, so check its schedule before planning your visit.
Willa
52 Main Street
For dinner, this is the best option in town. Willa is an elevated New American restaurant with a curated menu that relies on local farms and seasonal ingredients. The staff is incredibly welcoming. Because the space is popular, I recommend calling ahead to book a table, though they will accommodate walk in guests if they have the space.
Seasonal Tips for Visiting Millerton NY
Visiting in Winter
It is a great year round destination, but if you are hiking the South Taconic Trail, it will get icy. I always keep microspikes in my car for winter hiking at Taconic State Park. Afterward, you can warm up with a hot matcha at Muanjai Tea Bar.
Visiting in Spring
Trails can get very muddy during the spring thaw. Wear proper waterproof footwear if you plan on getting off the paved rail trail.
Visiting in Summer and Fall
These are the busiest times to visit. If you want to avoid the heaviest crowds on Main Street and secure a good parking spot, plan to arrive early in the morning before the lunch rush.
